Playa del Rey Real Estate By Patty Newcomer XML

Playa del Rey offers peaceful seaside living in a small community surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the wetlands.  Real Estate options in Playa del Rey include condo and apartment living, single-family and town homes, empty lots, and housing closest to the beach in an area locals refer to as “The Jungle”.  Pricing is affordable, with the average home price less than $500k.  Housing is available in both the mid $200k’s and over $1 million.  Many consider Playa del Rey’s oceanfront views to be some of the best in all of California.  Playa del Rey is located very close to downtown Los Angeles, but far enough away to avoid the smog and the heat, with temperatures usually 10 to 15 degrees lower than inland temperatures.  The town is only 15 minutes away from the Los Angeles International Airport, and it is connected by bridge to its sister city Marina del Rey.

Playa del Rey was originally developed as a resort town in the early 1900’s, but natural disaster to the area destroyed a good portion of what was built, forcing developers to redesign.  Rock jetties were installed in the ocean to reduce the enormous surf, and the town quickly became a residential community safe from Mother Nature.

The ocean’s proximity allows residents to partake in ocean-side activities such as boating, kayaking, fishing, sunbathing, swimming, and surfing in Playa del Rey’s three public beaches.  Even a hang-gliding facility is available for anyone willing to try.  Within walking distance, Marina del Rey offers even more opportunities for water-based fun with its huge boat harbor and pay-for boat cruises.

Playa del Rey has fine dining opportunities ranging from the Romantic and expensive to the child-friendly and casual.  Cuisine options include hamburgers and seafood, American, Italian, and French.  Various small boutiques are available for shopping, though it is only a few minutes’ drive to downtown Los Angeles or Santa Monica if one is looking for a wider selection of stores.
